IPIQ — Patent triage where every number shows its source
A rapid first-pass view of a patent's claim quality, legal status, standards status and indicative
value — with each figure labelled as retrieved, calculated, estimated or analyst-entered, and
anything unchecked said plainly as “not checked”.
What it does
-
Reads a patent by number and returns, in about a minute: claim-strength breakdown, validity screen
(US §101/102/103/112 or EPC), legal status and expiry, forward citations, family breadth, and
standard-essential status.
-
Adds an indicative value range (discounted cash flow, real-options view and a Monte Carlo range)
with every input visible and editable.
-
For pharma and biotech: FDA Orange Book / Purple Book linkage and SPC term-extension signals.
-
Exports a ranked portfolio report, so a long list can be narrowed to the few patents worth deeper
work.
- Covers US and EP patent numbers in this version.
What makes it different
-
Provenance on every field. LIVE (retrieved just now), DERIVED (calculated), AI EST. (model
estimate), ANALYST (entered by a person).
-
Honest gaps. If a source cannot be checked, the card says “not checked” — never zero, never a
guess presented as a fact.
-
Status from records, not memory. Legal status, adjusted expiry and citations are retrieved from
public records for US and EP numbers.
-
Analyst override. Anything you know and the public data does not can be entered and is carried into
the numbers.
About the developer
Dr. Shalini Menezes created IPIQ. Its valuation approach builds on her doctoral research on
revenue-apportioned patent valuation and real-options pricing, which is published on her university's
website. IPIQ is offered as a hands-on tool and as a report service; it is not a hosted product.
